The Suzuki Swift, which is in its third generation now, has been around for four years and the Japanese carmaker is already readying the next-generation model that will debut overseas next year. In markets abroad, the Swift also has a sportier cousin called the Swift Sport, the next-generation of which is due in 2023.
Now, according to latest reports, Suzuki is planning an SUV derivative based on the next-generation Swift. What’s even more interesting is that this high-riding SUV model will reportedly be based on the performance-focused Swift Sport.
- Next-gen Swift-based small SUV due in 2024
- Powertrain and platform will likely be shared with the next-gen Swift Sport
- Will be offered with optional AllGrip AWD system
Next-gen Suzuki Swift-based SUV: what do we know so far?
The next-generation Suzuki Swift will reportedly be based on an improved version of the Heartect platform, which also underpins the current model. It is expected to have an evolutionary approach in terms of styling and design. As for the Swift Sport due in 2023, it will likely carry forward the same 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system that powers the current model. The Swift Sport will, of course, boast of a sportier design to shout out its hot-hatch credentials and will likely also come with a stiffer suspension set-up.
This powertrain and platform will reportedly also serve as the base for an all-new SUV that could be called the Swift Cross and is rumoured to debut around 2024. It will get unique sheet metal, higher ground clearance, heavy plastic cladding on the bodywork as well as skid plates for that typical SUV look. The body will also be more upright than the Swift Sport, thus aiding practicality inside the cabin, particularly for passengers seated in the second row.
In overseas markets, Suzuki already offers its AWD system as an optional extra on small cars such as the Ignis, and it definitely remains a possibility on the Swift Cross as well.
And while all this is still speculation, as nothing has officially been indicated by Suzuki so far, a Swift Cross perfectly fits in the carmaker’s global portfolio as this high-riding model fills the gap between the Ignis urban crossover and larger B-SUVs such as the Vitara and S-Cross. Moreover, given the popularity of small SUVs in emerging markets, and more and more carmakers joining in, Suzuki might very well be tempted to tap into the trend.
Maruti Suzuki Swift for India
The Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of India’s all-time bestselling cars and was updated with a facelift in February. The Swift is powered by a 90hp, 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine and rivals the likes of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Tata Tiago. Given that India is one of the biggest markets for the Swift, it remains to be seen when the next-gen car comes to our country after its global debut.
Maruti Suzuki: upcoming launches
While a Swift Cross may not fit the bill for India, Maruti Suzuki is readying a slew of new launches and facelifts for the next couple of years. The first of these will likely be the heavily updated Maruti Suzuki Baleno that’s expected to debut sometime early next year. Following that, Maruti Suzuki is also working on an updated Brezza, which will also launch next year. Maruti has also lined upcomprehensive updates for the Ertiga and XL6 MPVs. Additionally, the carmaker has also been working on the much-awaited five-door Jimny. In partnership with Toyota, Maruti Suzuki is also developing a Creta-rivalling midsize SUV that’s expected to debut in 2023. Maruti has also revealed the all-new S-Cross. Read more on that here.
