Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new India-spec W206 C-Class. This is the sixth-generation of the Mercedes C-Class that globally debuted in February last year, and has finally made its way here. Bookings for the new C-Class are already underway, with the prices slated to be announced on May 10.

  • New C-Class gets one petrol and two diesel engine options
  • Interior design and tech are influenced by the new S-class
  • New C220d diesel delivers class-leading 23 kpl fuel economy

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: engine options for India

The new C-Class will launch with three engine options. The petrol engine (C200) is a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit that produces 204hp and 300Nm of torque. This replaces the 2.0-litre unit from the outgoing model.

The diesel engine is the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit that's available in two specs of tune. In the C220d, the engine produces 200hp and 440Nm of torque, while in the C300d, it produces 265hp and 550Nm of torque.

All three engines come mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox as standard, and also get a 48V mild-hybrid tech with integrated started generator (ISG) system that provides an additional 20hp and up to 200Nm of torque. Mercedes claims a fuel economy of 16.9kpl for the C200 and 23kpl for the C220d, which makes the latter the most fuel-efficient Mercedes in India.

As for performance, Mercedes claims a 0-100 kph sprint time of 7.3 seconds for the C200 and C220d variants, while the C300d can do the same in 5.7 seconds.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: variant details, design

The C200 and C220d variants of the new C-Class will be available in Avantgarde line, while the C300d will be available in a sportier AMG-line. The latter gets AMG-spec bumpers, a sportier grille and different alloy wheel design.

The C200 and C220d will be available in six exterior colour options  Salatine Grey, Mojave Silver, High-tech Silver, Manufaktur Opalite White, Cavansite Blue and Obsidian Black. Meanwhile, the C300d will be limited to the last three.

The new W206 C-Class has been brought in line with the new A-Class, E-Class and S-Class stable mates, primarily by way of shorter overhangs, a more angular front end and new headlamp and tail lamp designs.

In terms of dimensions, the wheelbase has increased by 25mm to 2,865mm and the overall length is up by 65mm. It’s also wider by 10mm.

The external proportions of the C-class remain familiar, but it has received design tweaks all round. This includes prominent ‘power bulges’ on the hood, a revised glasshouse that has been moved slightly farther back to give it a cab-rearwards design and creases and character lines have been kept to a minimum, primarily to bring out the prominent shoulder line.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: interior and features

The influence of the latest S-Class is most evident on the inside, thanks to the new portrait-orientated, tablet-style 11.9-inch central touchscreen. It uses Mercedes’ second-generation MBUX infotainment software, complete with connected car tech and voice assistant. It also comes with biometric authentication via fingerprint or voice, enabling users to access personalised data and media.

The screen is angled slightly towards the driver for ease of use and visibility on the move. A high-definition floating LCD digital instrument display and a new multi-spoke steering wheel are also similar to the ones on the new S-Class.

The C-class gets jet engine-inspired distinctive air vents, and the gear shifter and rotary dial have been removed, giving the centre console a very minimalist and clean look. Most infotainment functions are now operated via touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel.

Other standout features on the new C-Class include dual-zone climate control, dual-pane sunroof, wireless charging, powered front seats and steering adjust and Mercedes’ digital lights headlamps (C300d).

The C-Class will be available with three interior colour options  Macchiato Beige, Sienna Brown and Black  paired with either open-pore wood trim with aluminium inserts or a metal weave trim, depending on the variant.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: rivals

Upon launch, the new C-Class will continue its rivalry with the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Volvo S60 and the Jaguar XE.
