Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder: will be feature-laden
Ahead of its global debut, details of the new midsize SUV from Toyota have begun to trickle in. Sources tell us that Toyota will expand the Urban Cruiser SUV line-up in India with a second model, which will have the Hyryder suffix. This new SUV, not to be mistaken with the Vitara Brezza-based Urban Cruiser, will be a completely different and bigger vehicle. The SUV will be over four metres long and sit above the current Urban Cruiser, which could also see a full model change in the near future.
What we can also confirm is that the upcoming Toyota Hyryder will get two engine options, both expected to be 1.5-litre petrol units. A mild-hybrid set-up is expected for the lower variants, while the higher variants could get a full hybrid set-up. The full hybrid version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will come with Toyota’s hybrid system similar to the ones seen on the Prius and Camry hybrid.
As mentioned above, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s global debut is on July 1. Maruti Suzuki’s version of the SUV is expected to follow suit and sold via Nexa outlets. Both models will compete against the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and even the MG Hector and Tata Harrier.
However, it remains to be seen to what extent Toyota's highly fuel efficient full-hybrid compensates for the lack of a diesel engine in its midsize SUV line-up, which is something the segment leaders have.
