For some time now, KTM has been focusing on giving its V-Twin-engined bikes longer legs with added creature comforts that aid long days in the saddle. For instance, the 160hp 1290 Super Adventure S has features such as adaptive cruise control, TPMS and heated grips. Now, new patents have surfaced which show the Austrian marque is working on a new semi-automatic gearbox to be used in its V-Twin-engined models.
New KTM semi-automatic gearbox: how does it work?
The new KTM semi-automatic gearbox will use a centrifugal clutch which allows you to release the clutch lever without the bike stalling at a standstill. This is similar to MV Agusta’s SCS (Smart Clutch System) models, which feature a Rekluse clutch. Essentially, you still need to shift gears and once on the move you can do so using the bi-directional quick shifter, but you don’t need to hold the clutch in when coming to a standstill and the bike will not stall. This is a very helpful feature in slow-moving traffic and Rekluse even sells clutch kits for certain Harley-Davidson models with this same functionality.
KTM recently acquired a 25 percent stake in MV Agusta, and now, the Austrian marque handles the purchasing and distribution operations for the storied Italian brand. Considering the fact that the 1290 Super Duke GT and 1290 Super Adventure models are geared toward the long haul, and that new test mules have been doing the rounds for quite some time, we expect at least one of them to feature this new gearbox.
