India-spec Swift gets front fog lamps.

The launch of the fourth-gen Maruti Swift is imminent, with bookings already having opened. Another indication that the new Swift’s launch is close is that the model has started arriving at Maruti’s Arena dealerships across the country. This is where we have got our first good look at the India-specific Swift, which does get some design changes over the model on sale in markets abroad.

  1. New Swift for India gets front fog lights, new alloys
  2. Interior seems to be the same as UK- and Japan-spec Swift
  3. Powered by new 82hp Z12E engine that delivers 25.72kpl

From the images, we can see that the Swift on sale abroad and the one that’s scheduled to launch next week in India look more or less the same. The India-spec Swift does get fog lamps in the front bumper, and new alloy wheels. While the model here is in a monotone white finish, dual-tone colour options are almost a certainty.

Again, the Swift for India and the hatchback abroad seem to share nearly everything on the inside, from the ‘floating’ 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and asymmetrical analogue dials to the digital AC panel for the climate control system and flat-bottom steering with a variety of controls switches. Naturally, there won't be ADAS tech on offer with the India-spec Swift.

India-spec Swift's cabin layout is the same as the model on sale abroad.

The model here is a higher-spec variant, most likely the Swift ZXI. As is usually the case, the hatchback is most likely to be available in entry-level LXI, mid-spec VXI and top-spec ZXI trims. As we had reported earlier, all variants will get six airbags, along with seat belts and reminders to put them on for all five passengers. The images also show that it’ll come with a rear camera, rear defogger and wash/wipe, at least on higher-spec trims.

New Maruti Swift India engine details

As per our previous report, the Swift for India will be more frugal than the outgoing model. The new 84hp, 112Nm Z12E engine – a 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated unit – may be down on power (8hp and 1Nm) compared to the outgoing K12 engine, but it can go over 3km further on a litre of fuel, delivering and ARAI-rated efficiency of 25.72kpl. A 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT are most likely to be offered. The Swift CNG is expected to join the line-up later.

Maruti's rival to the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is expected to launch in India on May 9.
