New BMW M5: powertrain, performance

The new BMW M5 retains the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, however, now gets an electric motor inside the eight-speed automatic transmission. A similar setup is also found on the BMW XM SUV. The engine alone puts out 585hp, while the electric motor produces 199hp. The total system output is rated at 727hp and 1001Nm torque, which is sent to all four wheels via BMW’s M xDrive rear-biased all-wheel-drive system.

The new M5 can sprint from 0-100kph in 3.5 seconds, despite the additional weight of the motor and battery. The car now tips the scale at around 2.4 tonnes, making it about 500kg heavier than its predecessor. Top speed is limited to 250kph as standard, but the limiter can be raised to 305kph with the optional M Driver’s Package. Further, the 18.6kWh battery pack enables an electric-only range of 67-69 km as per the WLTP cycle. In all-electric mode, the new BMW M5 can hit speeds of up to 140kph. It supports AC charging of up to 7.4kW.

New BMW M5: equipment

The feature list consists of the latest iteration of BMW’s Curved Display, a flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with electric adjustment, a head-up display, four-zone auto climate control, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, M light alloy wheels (20-inch front, 21-inch rear) with high-performance tyres, and much more.

New BMW M5: launch details, price

The new-gen BMW M5 is priced from £110,500 (Rs 1.17 crore) onwards in the UK, with deliveries set to commence later this year. While there is no official word on its India launch yet, we expect it to make its way here next year. For now, BMW is focused on bringing the standard 5 Series to India, set to go on sale next month.
