The Mahindra Thar Roxx has launched in India, with prices starting at Rs 12.99 lakh, and going up to Rs 20.49 lakh for the top-spec AX7L 4x2. Prices for the 4x4 variants will be revealed before October 2, says the brand. Naturally, the question arrises as to just how much bigger the 5-door version is when compared to the Thar 3-door, and if it's more capable off-road. We've brought the two together, on paper, to find out.
Thar Roxx vs Thar 3-door: size, off-road capability
Thar Roxx vs Thar 3-door: Dimensions & off-road capability | ||
---|---|---|
Thar Roxx | Thar 3-door | |
Length (mm) | 4428 | 3985 |
Width (mm) | 1870 | 1820 |
Height (mm) | 1923 | 1844-1855 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2850 | 2450 |
Water wading (mm) | 650 | 650 |
Approach angle (degree) | 41.3 | 41.2 |
Departure angle (degree) | 36.1 | 36 |
Ramp over (degree) | 23.6 | 26.2 |
Alloy wheels (inch) | 19 | 18 |
The Thar Roxx is quite a bit larger on every metric – it is 443mm longer overall, 50mm wider, up to 79mm taller, and a wheelbase that is 400mm longer. This should bode for the space on the inside of the Roxx 5-door, which has seating for five passengers.
Interestingly, the Roxx is expected to be as capable, if not more, when off-roading, as the 3-door. The 5-door has similar water wading depth, approach and departure angles, although the ramp over angle has increased thanks to the longer wheelbase, which means there will be a lower likelihood of see-sawing on a rough patch.
Thar Roxx vs Thar 3-door: what else is different
Mahindra claims that it has made the Roxx more convenient and practical as well, as it gets a 447-litre boot, the side footstep height has been lowered by 41mm, there are AC vents for the rear passengers and the three-door’s hydraulic steering system has been replaced for an electronic one. As we’ve reported before, top-spec variants get a large panoramic sunroof, while mid-spec trims have a single-pane sunroof. Our Roxx price, variants report explains exactly which features are available with which variant.
In addition, the Thar 3-door gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine along with a petrol 4x4 model, neither of which come with the Thar Roxx.
