Hilux SUV concept is based on Hilux Rangga pickup.

Toyota has prevewed an all-new people mover based on the Hilux Rangga pickup. Called the "Toyota Hilux Rangga SUV", this vehicle will go on sale in Indonesia sometime next year.

  1. Hilux Rangga SUV will be readied by aftermarket coach builder
  2. Likely to get multiple seating options
  3. Powertrain, wheelbase will be shared with the Rangga pickup

Hilux Rangga is based on IMV platform

The Hilux Rangga SUV will be a local product for Indonesia, sources tell us.  It was previewed as a concept a few months ago and now Toyota Indonesia has confirmed that the vehicle will go into production with some minor changes. The Hilux Rangga SUV shares its underpinnings with the pickup which is based on the IMV platform that also undrepins the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner.

The Hilux Rangga SUVs bodyshell has been made by an aftermarket coach builder but the final product will be sold officialy by Toyota . It features conventional doors for the second row and the rear, and gets a three row 7-seater cabin. Sources tell us there will be multiple seating options provided at launch.  There aren’t many creature comforts as such but it does get AC, a touchscreen infotainment system and dual front airbags. The concept that was shown a few months ago also had LED headlamps, custom 16-inch alloy wheels and a few other accessories that may or may not be part of production model.

While the overall look of the Hilux Rangga SUV is still quite rudimentary, it has proper SUV-like ground clearance. There are no mechanical changes expected which means the Hilux SUV will be based on the pickup's running gear that comes with a RWD setup. Engine options include a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol or a 2.4-liter turbo diesel. Both powerplants can be either mated to a five-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.  While dimensions of the Hilux Rangga SUV concept are not known, the Rangga pickup has a wheelbase of 2,750mm, which is identical to the Fortuner.

While the Hilux Rangga wont make it to India, Toyota is readying an all-new rugged SUV for our market. Read more on that here
